Winter in Yellowstone National Park is brutal with subfreezing temperatures and deep, deep snow. Surviving winter there is a challenge and many animals don't survive. When the snow covers the grasses and plants, elk and other mammals will resort to browsing pine needles and bark just to make it through the day.
